ABOUT THE ROLE
As part of our mission, we install solar-powered water systems across the country. The primary objective of the Product Development Engineer - Solar and Battery Storage (in collaboration with our partners at EG4 Electronics) is to lead the design, testing, internal training, and deployment of a battery-backed, solar water well solution that will allow Amazi Water to more effectively and economically support the communities we are called to serve. This role ensures all installations are reliable, safe, cost-effective, and scalable.

This role ensures all installations are reliable, safe, cost-effective, and scalable.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Technical Leadership
- Design and supervise the installation of solar-powered water pumping systems, control panels, and electrical wiring.
- Standardize electrical engineering practices and ensure alignment with industry codes, Amazi Water’s quality standards and safety regulations.
- Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of our solar water systems
- Monitor and analyze systems performance data and prepare technical reports and documentation.
- Ensure all electrical systems are scalable, serviceable, and climate resilient
- Perform safety audits and risk assessments for all our solar systems
- Develop and implement new solar systems projects.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts on underperforming or malfunctioning electrical systems to minimize downtime.
- Provide weekly updates to both Amazi and EG4 Electronics leadership on the progress of the development and implementation of the proposed solution
- Develop and implement an effective strategy to train pertinent team members on this new solution
- Meet weekly with US and East Africa-based EG4 Electronics team members to design, test, and troubleshoot prototype
- Contribute to engineering planning, including feasibility studies, site assessments, system sizing, and bill of quantities (BoQs) for proposed battery-backed sites.
- Collaborate with hydrogeologists, civil engineers, technical teams in operations teams to deliver integrated and functional systems.
- Ensure timely completion of electrical components within project timelines and budgets.
- Ensure all work complies with national electrical standards, safety regulations, and internal quality standards.
- Establish inspection and testing procedures and maintain quality control throughout installation and maintenance phases.
- Maintain safety protocols for working with solar PV systems and electrical infrastructure.
- Provide expert oversight on high-risk installations and upgrades.
- Continuously seek opportunities and evaluate new tools, components or design methods improve battery-backed solution to improve system efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and technical sustainability.
- Conduct technical trials of new battery technologies and storage solutions for solar systems.
- Promote a culture of innovation by encouraging field-based testing and continuous technical improvement.
- Stay up to date on relevant technological advancements in solar, battery and water systems that could be used for solar-powered water pumping systems.
- Maintain accurate records of all installations, maintenance logs, and technical manuals.
- Provide regular reports on performance metrics, system uptime, and electrical-related incidents.
- Support donor and internal reporting by providing clear technical documentation.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Minimum 7 years of professional experience in solar or electrical systems, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Proven experience with solar-powered systems, preferably in rural or off-grid settings.
- Experience with water infrastructure (pumps, control systems, boreholes, distribution networks) is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with solar system design tools and electrical CAD software
- Registration with a recognized engineering body is an asset.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Standard work week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday, with flexibility required based on project needs.
- Significant fieldwork is expected, up to 80% of time will be spent visiting installation sites, conducting assessments, or supporting field teams.
- Ability to work in rural environments and adapt to varied field conditions is essential.
- Travel for training or technical exchange within the region may occasionally be required.
- This role is a one-year contract position.
